Big Almaty Lake (BAO) is a high-altitude glacial lake situated at 2,511 meters in the Big Almaty Gorge within the Ile-Alatau National Park, approximately 20–30 km from Almaty city. The lake was formed in a natural depression following earthquakes and serves as the primary drinking water source for Almaty, which is why swimming and fishing are strictly prohibited. The round-trip hike takes 6–8 hours and requires a valid passport, comfortable hiking gear, and provisions, as there are no facilities available at the lake.
