Museum of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Location: Within the city, Beybitshilik Street, 11 (Saryarka district, right bank of the Ishim River) — not to be confused with the building at Alikhan Bokeikhan Street, 1a (a separate building, the Nazarbayev Centre, with a different exhibition).

About this place: A memorial museum housed in the first working residence of Nursultan Nazarbayev, where the head of state's office has been preserved exactly as it was during his tenure.

Visitors come here less to examine displays and more to step into a time machine: the working office, furniture, and interior are all authentic, preserved from the days when the country's first president made decisions here. Admission is free, but entry without advance booking is not permitted — your visit must be arranged in advance by phone, and tours of the halls are only conducted with a guide at fixed times.

History

The building was constructed in 1996–1997 as the first official residence of the head of state — the administration moved here shortly after the capital was relocated from Almaty. The decree to open the museum was signed on August 28, 2004, the exhibition has been operating since March 2005, and since 2016 the museum has been administratively part of the Library of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan — Elbasy. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–12:15 and 14:00–16:15, by advance booking.
