The pass sits high above Shymbulak on the Zailiyski Alatau ridge, between the peaks of Shkolnik and Shymbulachka. Getting there is straightforward: from Medeu to Shymbulak takes 25–30 minutes by car, and then approximately 35 minutes by cable car directly to the saddle. This makes it a perfect day trip without requiring special hiking preparation—you can head up after breakfast and make it back down by evening. Snow lingers on the pass even in summer, so it's wise to dress warmer than you would in the city, regardless of season.
The cable car system to the pass was built in stages. The first line ascends from the lower station at approximately 2,260 meters to Peresechenie at 2,640 meters, taking nine minutes. The second continues higher to 2,920 meters. The third goes directly to Talgarsky Pass station at about 3,163 meters—a destination that once required a serious hiking expedition to reach on foot. In 2003, a fourth line was added to Konus station, opening the slopes to extreme sports enthusiasts. The pass connects the Malaya Almaty gorge with the Sauruksay river gorge, transforming it into one of the most accessible viewpoints in the mountains above Almaty—attracting not just mountaineers, but anyone with a cable car ticket.
From the pass saddle, numerous hiking routes branch out—downward into the Levyy Talgar gorge and further toward Solnechnaya Polyana meadow and Pushkin peak. However, these are serious multi-day expeditions requiring permits for the border zone, not weekend strolls. For a typical visit, reaching the saddle and returning is enough—the panorama unfolds right here without needing to descend into the gorge. The pass has no official difficulty classification: formally it's not a mountaineering objective but rather a popular spot for active recreation among city dwellers. The pass even inspired a bard song—for Almaty tourists and hikers, it's one of the most recognizable spots in the mountains, something of a local classic for weekend routes.
