Mokhnatka stands between Medeu and Kok-Zhailau plateau, away from the most popular trails of Zailiysky Alatau. The peak reaches approximately 2280 meters in elevation. Nearby routes to Furmanovka or Kok-Zhailau are more popular. However, the views from Mokhnatka are no less impressive: from here you can see both Shymbulak and the entire city at once. The starting point is approximately 25 km from the city center, before Medeu. There are two ways to reach the trail. The first option is to get off at the Akbulak (Prosvethenets) stop and climb for 3–5 hours. The second option is to start from the Ayusai visitor center toward Kok-Zhailau; this route is longer and takes up to 6.5 hours with breaks. In both cases, the round-trip distance is approximately 10 km, steep in some places, but no special equipment is required. The asphalt ends soon, the trail turns left upward and is marked with signs all the way to the summit. It is best to descend by the same route: side trails closer to the peak are more loose and unstable.
The Zailiysky Alatau ridge, of which Mokhnatka is a part, is part of the Northern Tian-Shan. It began rising during the Pliocene, approximately 12 million years ago. Tian-Shan continues to grow and remains one of the most tectonically active mountain regions on the planet. This explains the steep slopes of Mokhnatka and frequent granite outcrops on the surface. The mountain's name is much younger and has a simpler explanation: dense coniferous forest, spruce and pine, covers its slopes like a continuous carpet. From a distance, the mountain truly looks "fuzzy" or "shaggy." It is this forest, rather than rocks or glaciers, that makes Mokhnatka distinctive among other peaks overlooking Almaty.
On the lower slopes grows coniferous forest—spruce, pine, and birch in places. Starting from approximately 2000 meters, the forest thins out and alpine meadows begin. Throughout summer, scatterings of wildflowers cover these meadows. Mountain goats, roe deer, and foxes live in the forest and on the meadows, and various species of mountain birds can be found here. They are rarely visible from the trail, but their tracks are constantly encountered. The best time for a hike is summer and early fall, while the trail is dry and clearly visible. Trekking poles on steep sections can be helpful. The hike does not require mountaineering experience or special equipment. This is precisely why Mokhnatka is a good choice for those who want to escape the crowds on popular trails but are not ready for a serious climb like Furmanovka: the route is shorter, and the views are just as stunning.
