Panorama is not a separate route but rather a continuation of the ascent to Furmanov Peak. From the ridge to the summit is approximately one more kilometre and 150 metres of elevation gain. Both summits are typically conquered in a single outing, with the entire hike taking 8–10 hours. The route begins from the Medeu sports complex. First comes an asphalt road for about 20 minutes, then an unpaved track for roughly another half hour. Beyond that, a well-trodden path leads upward along the ridge. The route presents no technical difficulties, though loose rock appears closer to the summit, as it does on Furmanovka itself. Along the way, at an elevation of 2520 metres, stand the "Kacheli" (Swings): a popular viewpoint overlooking the Kimasar gorge and the city, which also serves as a route landmark. The best time to hike is summer or early autumn. In spring, during April and May, the slopes here are prone to avalanches, and climbing without specialized training is not advisable.
Furmanov Mountain, which lies on the path to Panorama, is named after Soviet writer Dmitry Furmanov, author of "Chapaev". In 1920, during the height of the Civil War, Furmanov served for several months as a commissar in Verny—as Alma-Ata was then called. Because of this, the gorge through which the route passes is still known as Komissarovskoe (Commissar Gorge). A Russified Kazakh name, Kimasar, is also in common use. The neighbouring summit in the upper reaches of the gorge was correspondingly named Furmanovka. Residents of Almaty are also familiar with Furmanov from his novel "The Revolt", which depicts events of 1917 in the same Verny. Panorama stands not on a lateral spur but on the main ridge of Azu-Tau. The view from here is wider than from Furmanovka—hence the name.
From Panorama's summit, the Left Talgar gorge is visible, as well as the direction towards Kapchagai. The panorama here is indeed broader than from neighbouring peaks. From the ridge as a whole, most of the summits of the Zailiysky Alatau come into view, and to the south-east the crown of Talgar Peak—one of the range's principal heights—is clearly discernible. The route to Furmanov and Panorama is one of the most popular day hikes among Almaty residents precisely because of its proximity to the city: it is easy to reach the trailhead at Medeu by public bus. Above-average physical fitness is required, but the route demands neither mountaineering experience nor special equipment. Many complete both summits in a single day, setting out before dawn to ensure they can descend while there is still daylight. The route is long, and timing should be planned carefully in advance.
